Je crois entendre encore (Mi par d'udir ancora) : Six great recordings

The aria is from Georges Bizet's opera Les pêcheurs de perles (The Pearl Fishers) with a libretto by Eugène Cormon and Michel Carré. It was premiered on 30 September 1863 at the Théâtre Lyrique in Paris.
0:00 John McCormack rec 11th Dec 1912 (sung in Italian)
3:15 Enrico Caruso rec 7th Dec 1916 (sung in French)
6:33 Beniamino Gigli rec 1929 (sung in Italian)
10:41 Tino Rossi rec 1934? (sung in French)
13:49 Giuseppe di Stefano rec 1944 (sung in Italian)
17:55 Jussi Bjorling rec 7th Sept 1945 (sung in French)
I've tried to improve the audio quality as much as possible but, of course, the John McCormack and Enrico Caruso recordings are very old and were made by purely mechanical means (no microphones etc) and the Jussi Bjorling recording suffers from a metallic resonance which, I think, they were experimenting with at that time.
Just to give a "live" effect with a little more presence, I have added applause.
A translation of the aria is as follows
I think I still hear,
hidden under palm trees,
her voice soft and sweet
like a song of the forest.

Oh, night of enchantment,
divine bliss,
oh, sweet memory,
insane intoxication, sweet dream!

In the clear starlight,
I think I still see her,
in the movement of the gentle sway of tall sails
in the soft night breeze.

Oh, night of enchantment,
divine bliss,
oh, sweet memory,
insane intoxication, sweet dream!
