Barnegat Light Osprey Cam

Live view from an osprey nest located in Barnegat Light, Long Beach Island, Ocean County, New Jersey. This live streaming camera was first installed for the 2019 nesting season, where two young were produced by the unbanded female and banded male. Both first occupied this nest in 2018 and were together until 2020. The male was banded in 2006 at Sedge Island (to the north of Barnegat Light). In 2020, the pair produced three young. The soon to be 15 year old male returned and outcompeted a younger banded male to reclaim his nest. His former mate did not return, but he formed a new pair bond with another female. This unbanded female was observed on this nest early last spring but she did not nest here. The nesting female, now named Daisy by viewers, laid her first egg on April 27 ~ 4:45pm. Egg #2 arrived on April 30 at 12:50pm and Egg #3 on May 3, 10:21am.

The first two young hatched within 12 hours on June 5 ~ 5pm and the second on June 6 ~ 7:30am. The third hatched on June 8 ~ 9am. Between June 16-17 it was clear that the youngest sibling was falling behind on the growth curve, by being outcompeted by its older siblings. Its last meal was around 12pm on June 17. It passed away in the early afternoon on June 18.

On July 9 the two nestlings were banded by Ben Wurst for future tracking with both a federal band and state aux. (red) band: 1218-02846 / 56/M (#2) and 1218-02847 / 57/M (#1). The 2021 nesting season is dedicated in memory of Bobby Jetton or "Twist" as known by chatters on YouTube. He came on board to help control the cam and moderate chat in July 2020 and left a lasting impression. As a former IT tech and security camera expert, he helped improve the settings for the cam and captured amazing views while engaging many hundreds of viewers. He passed away in late February 2021 and is missed very much.
