Rectocele (posterior wall prolapse or bowel prolapse) is a prolapse or bulge in the back wall of the vagina. This condition involves internal tissue stretching during childbirth or straining with constipation.

How to Stop Rectocele Worsening and Avoid Prolapse Surgery

1. Never Strain
Use the correct bowel emptying technique and never strain with a rectocele

2. Use Correct Bowel Emptying Technique

*Lean forward with the inward curve in your low back
* Use toilet paper folded up to support OR use fingers inside to hold the back wall up if desired
*Take 5-6 deep breaths
* Widen your waist say “MMM”
* Bulge abdomen forward say “OOO”
* Lift up through your pelvic floor when finished
3. Obey the urge
Don’t delay, empty your bowel immediately

4. Diet for Rectocele Management

A. Avoid eating too much high fibre which increases the size of your stool. Fibre is very important but more is not necessarily better for rectocele management. Aim for a Type 3 - 4 stool (Bristol Stool Scale).
B. Minimise gas producing foods eg cruciferous vegetables, onions, garlic, dried fruits.

5. Rectocele Repair Exercises

A. Kegel Exercises (pelvic floor exercises) can strengthen the muscles that support rectocele prolapse and reduce rectocele symptoms

7. Emergency Constipation Management for Rectocele
* Anticipate constipation to avoid e.g. holidays
* Mild constipation can be managed by osmotic laxative e.g. Osmolax, Movicol (check with your doctor or pharmacist before using any medication)
* Severe constipation may be managed with a suppository
