30 Action Stars, Then and Now

30 Aging Action movie Stars (Then and Now)
It’s a sad fact of life that everybody gets old, and even the famously energetic action stars of yesteryear aren’t immune. So while we still love to watch a white-vested Bruce Willis take out bad guys in Die Hard or a pumped-up Arnold Schwarzenegger quip his way through the jungle in Predator, this is what the heroes of the ’80s and ’90s really look like when you take off those rose-tinted glasses.
Wesley Snipes
Wesley Snipes had a run of action hits in the mid 1990s, including the legendary Demolition Man with Sylvester Stallone and Marvel movie Blade. But tax troubles saw him fall from grace in 2008, when he was sentenced to three years in prison. His comeback film? The Expendables 3.
Jean-Claude Van Damme
Jean-Claude Van Damme’s resume is something of a rollercoaster of good and bad movies, but Bloodsport, Kickboxer and Universal Soldier are just some of the highlights. A drug addiction in the late ’90s saw him decline, but the 2016 Kickboxer sequel could put him back on top.
Arnold Schwarzenegger
Arnold Schwarzenegger’s impressive career has seen him win big at the box office for the last 40 years, in everything from The Terminator to, well, Terminator Genisys. Indeed, even a stint as the Governor of California didn’t stop people from loving him.
Sylvester Stallone
The man behind the Rocky and Rambo movies is still going strong, despite numerous trips to the hospital behind the scenes of his most beloved action outings. In fact, in January 2016 Stallone took home a Golden Globe for his portrayal of Rocky in Creed.
Dolph Lundgren
Dolph Lundgren made his name as Ivan Drago in 1985’s Rocky IV alongside Slyvester Stallone, but a decade later he was mostly doing bargain-basement movies that nobody saw. It wasn’t until 2010 that Lundgren’s career picked up, after Stallone came to the rescue again by casting him in The Expendables.
Steven Seagal
Above the Law, Hard to Kill, Out for Justice – all action classics starring martial arts legend Steven Seagal. Unfortunately, these days the actor is perhaps better known for putting on a bit of weight, allegedly sexual harassing women and generally not being very nice.
Jackie Chan
A different kind of action star to Hollywood’s pumped behemoths, Jackie Chan has nonetheless conquered America with movies like Police Story, Rumble in the Bronx and Rush Hour. He’s winding his action roles down a bit now, though, as he thinks he is getting too old for this stuff.
Chuck Norris
Martial artist, actor and Internet meme Chuck Norris was a box office draw in the early ’80s and a TV star in the ’90s. These days, though, he’s popped up in The Expendables 2, but he’s otherwise mostly a political internet columnist.
Donnie Yen
Bruce Willis
Bruce Willis may always be known as Die Hard’s John McClane, but he has diversified his career extensively since then. That being said, he’s still just as likely to be found on the big screen holding a gun and blowing stuff up.
Carl Weathers
Nicolas Cage
Oscar-winner Nicolas Cage proved himself as an action star in the late ’90s in films like Con Air and Face/Off. Cage is still plugging away too, and the internet really, really loves him for it.
Jet Li
A massive star in both Hollywood and Asia, martial artist Jet Li first came to the attention of American audiences in the late ’90s. And he’s still making hits on both continents today, despite being 52 years old and suffering with an overactive thyroid problem.
Chow Yun-fat
Mel Gibson
Mel Gibson is better known today for his much-publicized meltdown and is unlikely to have a big hit any time soon. But back in the day, Gibson was flying high as the action star of genre classics like the Mad Max and Lethal Weapon movies.
Kurt Russell
Keanu Reeves
Is Keanu Reeves immortal? He very well might be, based on the fact that he looks almost exactly the same in 1991 action classic Point Break as he does in 1999 megahit The Matrix and 2014 actioner John Wick. The guy’s 51, for crying out loud.
Will Smith
His greatest action movie days might be behind him – think ’90s fare like Independence Day and Bad Boys – but Will Smith is without doubt one of the biggest stars in the world right now. Plus, he’s about to return to his action best with 2016’s Suicide Squad.
Tom Cruise
Tom Cruise was an action star in the ’80s, and he’s been an action star in every decade since. In fact, his last movie, 2015’s Mission Impossible – Rogue Nation, was one of his biggest movies to date, and it saw the Cruiser once again doing many of his own stunts.
Harrison Ford
Hulk Hogan
Rutger Hauer
Danny Glover
Danny Trejo
Lorenzo Lamas
Mickey Rourke
Kevin Costner
Christopher Lambert
