ConstructAfrica presents ... Great Wall of Lagos / Eko Atlantic City, Nigeria

With erosion wiping out the coastal beaches of Lagos and Lekki, a solution was proposed to build an 8.5km revetment to hold back the destructive power of the Atlantic Ocean. But the Lagos State Government wanted to do far more than that... by reclaiming land lost to 100 years of erosion, birthing Eko Atlantic City...

The Eko Atlantic city is designed to reverse the trend of erosion and loss of land from Atlantic ocean surges that are being experienced at Bar Beach in Victoria Island, Lagos. The new city will pride itself in having a new and eco-friendly urban infrastructure in line with modern and international standards, and offer a prime real estate in Lagos for a new financial center.

The Eko Atlantic city is standing on 10 million square miles of land reclaimed from the ocean, making it the biggest reclamation project anywhere in Africa. The 8.5km 'Great Wall of Lagos' that protects the city is the largest of its kind in Africa at eight-and-a-half metres above sea level. The city will have its own power generation and effective underground drainage system and many more.

The developer of the project is South Energyx Nigeria Limited. The main contractor for dredging and sea reclamation works is Dredging International. The engineering design consultant is Royal Haskoning (marine engineers).
