Molasses Food for The Soil ~ Noreen's Garden
Greetings! This week we are sharing the benefits of molasses for the soil! Molasses propagates and encourages good microbial activity in the soil and gives the beneficial bacteria something to feed on so it won't bother the roots of your plants. Thereby creating a sybiosis that can be super beneficial to your garden, your plants and the overall production of your garden.
This time of year you may not be thinking of fertilizing the garden when putting it to bed, however once you get everything pulled up, ,knocked down and mulched over, this is the perfect time to give a broadcast feeding of this secondary fertilizer so that the good bacteria can continue to do their job under the surface of all that much and in the spring you will have soil that is ready and raring to go.
Molasses is also a great additive to your compost bin or pile. Simply mix 1/4 cup of molasses per gallon of water and dump it on. This will help the good bacteria do their job of composting and breaking down the waste into good, usable soil or "black gold".
In some parts of the country you may be able to get your hands on what is called agricultural molasses, which is used for fertilization purposes. I know that in some places you can take your own container and purchase it by the gallon for a much cheaper price than the culinary variety. However the regular grocery store variety of molasses works just fine as well!
I hope you learned something that can be helpful to you in your garden this week! Go get some molasses and give it a try!
Happy Planting!
