How the chemistry of clothing protects you on Everest

To survive in the mountains you need to keep warm, but you also need to move efficiently and not get too hot and sweaty whilst active. How does our clothing enable us to do this? Here Dr Melanie Windridge finds out about microfibres, waterproof coatings and hydrophobic down – innovations in clothing technology that have helped climbers in the big mountains and ordinary people on local hill walks. She talks to Stephanie Chapman at the University of Southampton about the chemistry and physics behind clothing designs that keep us comfortable on the mountain, and she shows the clothing in action on her climb of Everest. This video was supported by the Royal Society of Chemistry Outreach Fund.

Dr Melanie Windridge summited Mount Everest on 21st May 2018. Find out more about the climb and the associated outreach project at http://melaniewindridge.co.uk/a-journey-of-discovery.
