Trico Poops
This was done on my 2nd playthrough having given Trico only about 30 Barrels.
The Checkpoint Restart was done to see if Trico is random when Pooping.
He did it 4x in this location so I do not think it is totally random otherwise the Checkpoint Restart would have altered & change Trico's behaviour.

I would say you position from Trico plays a strong part in allowing him to poop, as the Trophy for watching him refers to 'Caught him in the act'
So keeping a distance or going on ahead before running back to Trico may encourage him to poop.
The tight tunnel also shows he can poop anywhere when not in Battle.
