Let's Hike: Abandoned Pennsylvania Turnpike Tunnels
Not far from Breezewood, Pennsylvania lie 13 miles of abandoned highway. The famous Pennsylvania turnpike was re-routed in 1968, leaving these 13 miles to be reclaimed by nature. Among this 13 miles lies three tunnels, two of which are seen here. The Sideling Hill and Rays Hill tunnels still sit in these hills and are able to be visited by the public. Construction on both tunnels began in 1881 for a railway and were converted to a highway in 1938. They saw use for 30 years until traffic became to congested and forced expansion which resulted in these tunnels being cut off and bypassed.
This video was put together by Alex Prizzi and includes shots from himself and Katie Prizzi as they explored the abandoned tunnels.
