He Beat Rome Twice. His Own Victories Destroyed Him

Pyrrhus of Epirus was considered one of the greatest military commanders in ancient history. Even Hannibal ranked him above himself. In 280 BC, he crossed into Italy and defeated Rome at Heraclea. Then again at Asculum. Both victories were devastating — for Rome and for Pyrrhus. He lost so many of his best officers and men that after Asculum he reportedly said: one more victory like this and I am finished. He was right. His army bled out through winning. He returned to Greece having gained nothing. Rome recovered, regrouped, and expanded anyway. His name became a word for self-defeating success: a Pyrrhic victory.
