All aboard: Londoners ride vintage red double-decker buses along major route for free

Thousands of Londoners riding on one of the capital’s major bus routes on Saturday (March 29) were treated to free rides on a real route in vintage vehicles up to 80 years old as part of a transport heritage initiative.
A total of 35 ancient buses ploughed the 19 bus route from Finsbury Park in the north to Wandsworth, south of the River Thames. Many passengers turned up specially for the event, but many were ordinary commuters who took advantage of a piece of history for free.
Many of the buses are owned by the London Bus Museum. But Alan Nicholls, one of the volunteers on the project, said some were in private ownership and were driven by their owners for pleasure.
The buses are decked out with posters from the period, inviting people to queue, and above all not to spit, which attracted a five pound penalty – a heavy fine in the 1930s. That’s 400 pounds in today’s money.
Many of the buses entered service before World War II in what rapidly became the largest fleet in the world, Nicholls said. The step-on step-off Routemaster was withdrawn in 2005.
