Narcissus, an ancient Greek legend of a handsome youth, wholly inaccessible to the feeling of love. The nymph Echo, loved him so, but in vain, rejected, she died away, with eternal love, longing and grief. One of his rejected lovers, however, prayed that Narcissus be punished for his unfeeling heart. Narcissus suddenly, seeing his own face reflected in a well, with that image, fell in love. Thirsty to death, Narcissus would not disturb his reflection, lest it vanish. And vehemently rage lest anyone dare. So pined away he did, and die. To let live an image, but him Self deny.
