The robot joint that stumped engineers for a century until one man figured it out alone

Most people walk past machines every day without realizing someone spent 40 years perfecting how they move.

This engineer, Mark Rosheim built a robotic joint that mimics a human wrist — full range of motion, no wobble, no compromise. The first version had custom-machined gears and hand-loaded bearings. Stunning. Also nearly impossible to afford.

So he started over. Again and again. Eight generations of the same idea, each one simpler than the last.

The final version uses off-the-shelf parts. Costs a fraction. Performs better.

He pulled inspiration from a 1789 sketch, a library book, and the way your muscles actually contract when you move your arm.

Simple turned out to be the hardest thing to build. 🔩

What do you think takes more skill - making something complex, or making something simple?
