Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari Movie Review | Anupama Chopra | THR India

In her review for The Hollywood Reporter India, Anupama Chopra examines why Sunny Sanskari ki Tulsi Kumari, despite having all the right ingredients for a frothy Bollywood rom-com, falls disappointingly flat. Directed by Shashank Khaitan and co-produced by Karan Johar, the film stars Varun Dhawan, Janhvi Kapoor, Sanya Malhotra, and Rohit Saraf against the lavish backdrop of a Udaipur wedding. With songs, dance, costumes by Manish Malhotra and others, and constant references to Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, the setup promises sparkle. Yet, as Anupama points out, the story reduces itself to a generic rehash that never rises above cliché.

She notes how the paper-thin screenplay, predictable plotlines, and uninspired humor squander the star power on screen. Even the wedding planner character, played by Maniesh Paul, fails to evoke laughs, leaving audiences longing for better-written moments. While Varun works hard to inject goofy charm and Sanya shows glimpses of her usual finesse, their talents are mostly underutilized. For Anupama, the film struggles with shallow emotions and forced social messaging, making the relationships on screen feel contrived and weightless. Her conclusion is blunt: Sunny Sanskari ki Tulsi Kumari is less engaging than simply watching the talented cast have lunch together.
