#5 Santa Clara Creek - Control Flash Flooding at Kee Street 20 July 2014
This is the fifth video of flash flooding in the Santa Clara Creek. It shows the results of the efforts brought forth by the Santa Clara Pueblo Tribal Government and the Federal and State of New Mexico Government Agencies to mitigate the flash flooding crisis in the Santa Clara Pueblo Community. Many types of post fire recovery projects to control erosion have been used in the headwaters area and in the larger area of the Las Conchas Wildland Fire (26 June 2011) fire burn locale. These efforts continue to take recovery steps to reduce the post-fire runoff and the devastating effects of erosion. Their efforts include reseeding, mulching, channel treatments, contour log terraces, straw wattles, silt fences, seedling transplant, building a gabion dam, widening the Kee Street Bridge and other erosion risks reduction methods. Flash flooding will remain a threat in this watershed for the next 5 years until the vegetation can be re-establish again.
If you view the 4 other earlier videos of the Santa Clara Creek flash flooding, you will see less debris, sediments and reduce flow velocities runoff as the flooding runs its course in this video. All of the erosion control system are working together and allowing new vegetation to re-establish its self again in the burn area the Las Conchas Fire. The flash flooding threat and danger to our community have been decreased but we must still be aware and alert to warnings when mountain storms weather develops.
Location: N 35.58'10 - W 106.05'16, Elevation 5616 feet
