Sample replacement, or sample enhancement in this case, is a pretty simple way to get that perfect drum sound you're looking for. In this video, I show you a beat production trick and we dive into layering kick drums.

It doesn't matter if you're working with an acoustic drum kit that you've recorded or if you're working with percussion made entirely from samples... This drum production approach works in both situations.

The session I'm working with has some really cheap (but cool) sounding cymbal samples and a pretty natural sounding kick drum... I'd like to change the kick drum sample a little bit to have it match the feel of the cymbals.

You can do this with drum replacement, where you completely swap the existing kick with a brand new sample... But in our situation, we're going to use drum sample enhancement and blend a new drum sample into our existing drum sound to get the best of both worlds!

In the end, this drum layering sample production technique really helps pull the sound of the drum set together to further serve the feel of the song. Without the kick production, this track would definitely be missing that special something!

If you're wanting to dive into drum sample production or drum sound replacement, but don't have any samples to work with, I suggest you buy a sample pack or two. Here are a couple sites I trust and have purchased from before:
