What Is the Link Count in Linux? #Linux #LinuxCommands #Sysadmin

That number sitting right after the permissions in ls -l output is the link count — and most Linux beginners walk right past it.

For files it is almost always 1. For directories it reflects the number of subdirectories plus 2, accounting for the current directory and its parent. You will not use it often, but now you know it is there.
