Feds Finalize Public Charge Rule #homelandsecurity #dhs #medicaid #snap #publiccharge

On July 20, the Department of Homeland Security officially announced they have finalized their rule on “public charge.” The final Rule strikes the 2022 framework without drafting a regulatory replacement. Immigration officers will instead use their discretion and will no longer need to restrict their reviews to individuals who will be primarily dependent on cash assistance. They can consider use of Medicaid, SNAP, and housing assistance as factors to block someone’s status adjustment. Health policy experts warn this could increase emergency room use, uncompensated care, and health disparities. The final rule takes effect September 18, 2026.
