STORYLINE:
Crowds of demonstrators gathered in the Mexican capital on Sunday in a protests targeting the country’s ruling party ahead of the nation's June presidential elections.

Protesters in Mexico City carried signs that read “We are Mexicans,” a reference to what they claim are President Andrés Manuel López Obrador's attempts to divide the country.

Mexico is extremely polarized ahead of the June 2 presidential election.

Marches were organized in a hundred cities across the country, and in other cities in the United States and Spain.

The demonstrations called by Mexico’s opposition parties advocated for free and fair elections in the Latin American nation and railed against corruption the same day presidential front-runner Claudia Sheinbaum registered as a candidate for ruling party Morena.

Many protesters at the rally in Mexico City carried banners supporting opposition candidate Xóchitl Gálvez, who spoke at the rally.

In her speech, Xochitl Galvez, who arrived accompanied by Santiago Taboada, candidate for governor of Mexico City, said before a political party, the country comes first.
