Roland RE501 Tape Echo Machine Test Run Fun

Test run fun with the Roland SE 501 Analog ""Real" Tape Echo. This is classic old school all analog technology that is to me the Genesis, the Mother of Live Looping, Electronic Music and DUB and everything else thereafter. This one's just serviced back to full working order for a lucky client who owns this beauty

The Roland RE 501 was the last model in Roland's successful run during the 70's of well thought out designs, great sound and reliability and represents for me the best in the technological evolution of tape echo machines of the last century. Roland's designs improved upon what was originally drawn from the early Echoplex tape echoes.

I have had 1st hand experiences with the Roalnd SE101, 201 and 501 and do think that the 501 is the best sounding in terms of lowest in noise and echoed tone but the 201 is especially grungy sounding and fun for "Dub" and self OScillation tweakeroo fun. The one model i've yet to get my hands on is the Roland SE301. Do let me know please if you have one.

In this test I'm feeding random signals into the inputs and testing out playing with the controls eg. record head selection dial, tape speed, regeneration/feedback and "Sound on Sound" which was a unique Roland design feature and also manipulating the tape itself.

There are many combinations of settings and controls to get cool recognizable sounds and out of this world sonic textures...always different always surprising......

Can you guess what's that "gunshot" like sound towards the end of this clip?

Btw that kinda "eerie swishing sound" you hear throughout this vid is actually the sound of the physical tape coiling in the tape tank that my iphone's mic picked up..
