THE GATEKEEPING OF DATA ANALYST JOBS // There’s some serious gatekeeping of data analyst jobs going on and it’s keeping people with excellent skills from pursuing jobs they might really enjoy.

So let’s talk about it. Of all the different pieces of info that are out there for aspiring data analysts, which ones are important and which ones are “nice to haves” or even “never need to learns”?

Let’s break down some of the most common problematic views I see or get comments on when it comes to data analysts.

You need to know dozens of tools:
“Data analysts use so many different tools. I don’t know how I’ll ever learn them all.”

No code / low code isn’t an option:
“No code means no hire. I will always hire someone with at least python experience over someone who only uses Tableau and Power BI.”

You must have an analytics / math degree to be a data analyst
“I’d love to change careers to a data analyst job but I don’t have the money or time to get a degree”
