Dog pulled from LA river in dramatic helicopter rescue

A dog has been saved from the rain-swollen Los Angeles River in a dramatic airborne rescue.

The little brown dog was spotted in the raging river after a sudden thunderstorm swept the San Fernando Valley in California on Friday afternoon.

US television showed footage of the rescue operation as a firefighter was lowered on a cable from a helicopter into the river to save the animal.

Witnesses said the dog was swept about a mile downriver near the Burbank border.

The authorities hope to reunite the dog, which was wearing a collar and a lead but no identification tag, with its owners.
