4K Cab Ride NL Zaanstraat Amsterdam - Watergraafsmeer / Loc 1700 Power Beast / 17-12-2020
Hi everyone! Night-term curfew bonus video! This weekend I wanna spoil you guys with a short extra video. In december 2020 I had to shunt a locomotive 1700 from the workshop Zaanstraat to the Watergraafsmeer. A short ride. But since riding a 1700 is kind of a story from the past I couldn't let my camera stay in its bag.
Refilling Braking Sand:
These 1700 locomotives are used for the intercity between Amsterdam and Bad Bentheim. In the past Loc 1700 was also used for other trains like the DDAR and DDM1. They retired over a year ago.
The reason why we need to take the train to the Watergraafsmeer is because this locomotive needs a refill on the braking sand that's on board. Braking sand is used on slippery tracks. Sand is spilled unto the tracks and the wheels so the train gets more grip at moments like that. Every now and the sand reservoirs need to be refilled.
The Short Ride:
We start with getting permission to depart. Because we don't have signals at the end of the tracks at the Zaanstraat we must make a call to get permission to take the train to track 90. At that location we meet our first signal that will give us permission for the rest of the ride.
After we got our permission to depart we take the train on low speed over the shunting yard. All junctions are manually set at this shunting yard. They're already in the correct position, but still it's the drivers task to make sure one isn't pointing in the wrong direction. Hence the lower speed.
The Power of The Beast:
After waiting a few minutes at the red signal (make sure to smile) we depart from the Zaanstraat to Amsterdam and further. Just after Amsterdam Central Station I'll bring the train almost to a full stop to show you the locomotives strength. Hope you will enjoy that. Too back the maximum speed on our way to the Watergraafsmeer is only 60km/h. Haha.
After arrival at the Watergraafsmeer we meet the end of the video. More about this locomotive can be found in the stories at my Instagram main page. Make sure to check it out soon.
If you have any questions, please let me know in the comments. Stay safe everyone! Cheers.
