Temper tantrums are often misunderstood. Parents have to understand that their child is either trying to communicate or displaying their emotions but doesn't really know what to do. Also, kids throw temper tantrums because they work. Parents will give in which reinforces the behavior.

Resist the temptation to give in. Be sure to keep calm, use empathy, and help them understand what is going on.
