"Fighter," "tough," "thoughtful," "compassionate," and "honest" are the words Chief Justice John Roberts used to describe late justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg during a memorial service held for her on Wednesday.

"She was not an opera star, but she found her stage right behind me in our courtroom," Roberts said. "There she won famous victories that helped move our nation closer to equal justice under law to the extent that women are now a majority in law schools, not simply a handful."

Ginsburg died Friday, Sept. 18, due to complications from metastatic pancreatic cancer, the court said.

In a statement Friday, Roberts described her as "a jurist of historic stature" and "a tireless and resolute champion of justice."

Following the ceremony, Ginsburg will lie in repose at the court on Wednesday and Thursday. On Friday, she will lie in state at the United States Capitol, become the first woman to do so.
