How to Make Biochar Compost

This video explains how we produce biochar compost on our farm. We start with pure charcoal produced in our Exeter Retort Kiln using sustainably harvested wood from our forest land and scrap wood from our local mill, Ghent Wood Products. The wood is converted into pure charcoal via a thermochemical conversion process, called pyrolysis, at around 450 degrees C for about eight hours. Each batch is then weathered and chipped into smaller particles before the biochar is mixed into to fresh windrows of manure, hay, and vegetable food scraps from a local fermented food manufacturer in Hudson, called Hawthorne Foods. As the compost matures, the biochar is inoculated with beneficial microorganisms and saturated with moisture.

When added to the soil, the biochar enhances soil structure, porosity, and water-holding capacity

, and sequesters carbon in the soil for thousands of years.
