Recording an early-Prince-inspired drum sound for my new song

For my new Point Lobo song, “Kita City,” I wanted to have a drum sound that harkens back to early 80s Prince albums like Dirty Mind and Controversy. I ended up creating a hybrid sound somewhere between the live drums on Dirty Mind (recorded in a rental house on Lake Minnetonka, according to an interview I read with Bobby Z) and the LM-1 drum machine plus live drums on Controversy (recorded in his “Purple House” on Lake Reilly in Chanhassen). Of course sounds mean nothing if it isn’t performed with the right intention, so I made sure to play with that driving, on-top-of-the-beat feel on those recordings.
