The American Gothic Myth — They Weren’t Even Farmers #history #arthistory #historyofart

Everyone knows American Gothic — the stern farmer and his wife, standing proud in front of their Iowa farmhouse.
But here’s the twist: they weren’t a couple… or farmers.

The man was Grant Wood’s dentist, and the woman was his sister.
Wood saw a small house in Eldon, Iowa, with a Gothic window and thought, “This house needs people like that.”
He dressed his models to look like rural America during the Great Depression — upright, hardworking, and enduring.

The pitchfork, the somber faces, and the vertical lines became symbols of perseverance and quiet pride.
But the irony is timeless — the painting meant to honor farmers was built on imagination, not reality.
