Betty Rollin Interview: Navigating Life's Challenges & Finding Strength

Betty Rollin describes her childhood growing up in Yonkers as odd. She tells the story of how she started as an actress, became a writer at Vogue and a correspondent for NBC. Rollin discusses what breast cancer taught her, how she helped her mother die and the passing of her husband.

Betty Rollin is a journalist and former correspondent for NBC News, her special reports for Nightly News included a series on the Native Americans of Pine Ridge, South Dakota, which won both the duPont and Emmy awards. She is the author of six books, including First You Cry, a moving story - the first of its kind - about her breast cancer and mastectomy. Published in 1976, it received wide critical acclaim and was made into a television movie starring Mary Tyler Moore. Her bestseller Last Wish, published in 1985 and republished in 1998 deals with the suicide of her terminally ill mother.
