Canon 50mm FD reverse mount manual aperture control for macrophotography

The canon 50mm 1:1.8 FD mount lens is a great (and cheap) lens for macrophotography. To get into the macro range you can mount the lens in the reverse orientation using a reverse ring that screws into the front thread of the lens. This allows you to focus on closer objects to magnify them in the sensor.

The manual aperture control ring on this lens allows you to change the aperture on the go whilst you are taking photos. The more recent canon 50mm EF mount versions have electronic aperture control so the only way to change the aperture is to mount in the usual orientation on the camera, set the aperture, take the lens off with this aperture, then reverse mount....

This lens is far more enjoyable to use. However, to activate the manual aperture control in the reverse mount orientation you have to slightly adjust the lens, which is very easy to do once you know (and remember) how!
