Over 75 years ago, Austrian psychiatrist Dr. Johan Schultz created this technique as part of his self-hypnosis routine for patients — and Autogenic Training continues to be used across most of Western Europe. Now on the American continents as well, physicians and psychologists utilize these techniques for many physical disorders, anxiety, depression, and, of course, to promote generalized relaxation.
The most effective way of utilizing Autogenic Training correctly, achieving the most desirable results, is to follow these simple procedures on a daily basis:
* Shortly after waking up in the morning, before work or school, give yourself an additional 20 minutes to practice most or all of the exercise in a quiet, reclined environment, with no distractions.
* After arriving home from work or school, repeat this procedure. It is important that the phone be out of reach, and that others know that this is an important time for you to practice clinical relaxation — distraction-free. Try not to fall asleep when sitting.
* Finally, at bedtime, Autogenic Training can be an excellent, noninvasive procedure for sleeplessness, insomnia, and the like.
