JWST Just Broke 30 Years of Atmospheric Models. Here's What It Saw.
JWST directly imaged Epsilon Indi Ab — a gas giant 7.6× the mass of Jupiter, just 12 light-years from Earth.
For 30 years, atmospheric models said this kind of cool gas giant should be ammonia-dominated. JWST saw the ammonia signal — but way weaker than predicted. The best explanation? Thick water-ice clouds suppressing the signal from below.
Published this week in ApJ Letters by Max Planck Institute. The strongest evidence yet for water-ice clouds on a directly imaged exoplanet.
