Did Pakistan shoot down five Indian fighter jets? What we know

Tensions between India and Pakistan escalated into a four-day military conflict beginning on May 7, 2025, after India conducted airstrikes on nine locations across six cities in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir. India claimed the attacks targeted "terrorist infrastructure" in retaliation for the April 22 killings of 25 Indian tourists and a local guide in Pahalgam, blaming Pakistan for backing the assailants — a claim Islamabad denied.

Pakistan reported that Indian strikes hit two cities in Pakistan-administered Kashmir and four sites in Punjab province, killing civilians. India’s Defence Minister rejected these claims, stating Indian forces only targeted those involved in harming civilians.

In response, Pakistan claimed it shot down five Indian fighter jets, a drone, and several quadcopters on May 7. According to Pakistan’s military, these jets were downed within Indian territory and no aircraft from either side crossed borders during the hostilities. British defence analyst Michael Clarke confirmed that both countries used long-range weapons and operated within their airspace.

Pakistan Air Vice Marshal Aurangzeb Ahmed further stated that the downed aircraft included three Rafales, a MiG-29, and an Su-30. He claimed the dogfight involved 60 Indian and 42 Pakistani jets, lasting just over an hour.

India has not officially confirmed or denied these losses. Its embassy in China dismissed reports by Chinese state media as “disinformation.” Indian Air Operations head AK Bharti neither confirmed aircraft losses nor details, saying only that "losses are part of combat" and that all pilots had returned safely.

Independent verification remains elusive. Some Indian security sources told Al Jazeera that three fighter jets crashed within India-controlled territory, without identifying their origin. As neither side claims incursions into each other’s airspace, any wreckage found would likely be Indian.

Reuters reported, via sources in Indian-administered Kashmir, that three jets crashed. CNN reported two downed jets, and a French source confirmed at least one Rafale had been shot down. AP photos also showed aircraft debris in Pulwama, further supporting claims of jet losses.

Defence analyst Clarke noted that if India lost a Rafale, it would be "embarrassing" and that India may keep it unofficial as long as possible. India’s acknowledgement of “losses” might be the closest it comes to confirming specific aircraft losses in the short term. The true details remain contested amid a battle of narratives following the ceasefire brokered by the U.S. on May 10.
