The Interceptor is a joint development between the German sensor solutions leader Hensoldt and TYTAN Technologies. This project addresses the critical "cost-per-kill" ratio in modern air defense. Currently, shooting down a $10,000 kamikaze drone often requires a missile costing $200,000 or more, which is economically unsustainable in long-term conflicts. The Interceptor changes this by utilizing a high-speed, AI-driven drone as the weapon itself. Unlike traditional drones that carry explosive warheads, the Interceptor is built for high structural integrity to survive high-speed impacts or simply to ensure the destruction of the target through kinetic energy alone.

The drone is part of Hensoldt's broader Counter-UAS (C-UAS) ecosystem, which includes the Spexer radar series. Once a threat is detected, the AI command system calculates the optimal interception path and launches the drone. Its onboard sensors take over in the final stage of the flight, ensuring precision tracking even if the target is maneuvering or using electronic jamming. The system is designed to combat drone swarms—a tactic where multiple UAVs attack simultaneously to overwhelm defenses. By deploying a swarm of relatively cheap interceptors, defenders can neutralize the threat at a fraction of the cost of traditional missile-based systems, preserving expensive assets for higher-priority threats like aircraft or cruise missiles.
