(Part 3) Nobody Has Explored This Abandoned Mine in a Long Time
I time-traveled back to the 1880s. At least it felt that way when I re-visited the Loomis Mine and explored the upper tunnel that I skipped during my previous visit to this fantastic, seldom-visited abandoned mine. The upper tunnel was dug in 1881, and the lower tunnel was dug in 1886. Silver was the main commodity mined at the Loomis Mine.
When I entered the upper tunnel, I immediately found myself in a huge stope (underground cavern) with multiple openings to the outside. I followed the winding drift level throughout the stope and found a couple of chutes and ore passes that were pretty steep and which have been reported to descend a very considerable distance down into the bowels of the mountain.
I initially believed that the workings in the upper tunnel probably connected with the workings in the lower tunnel. However, after exploring the upper tunnel, I think that the two tunnels are completely separate workings and don't share a connection. They are almost like two separate mines. I could be wrong about this, though.
If you missed Part 1 where I explored the first level, its branching tunnel, and the headframe over the inclined shaft, click here: https://youtu.be/vTjxA58sRjk
If you missed Part 2 where I descend the inclined shaft to the three lower levels in the Loomis Mine, it is located here: https://youtu.be/zmaQkr521zs
I hope you enjoy my final exploration of the Loomis Mine!
