RICK AVILES: THE MAN BEHIND GHOST’S MOST INFAMOUS VILLAIN
RICK AVILES: THE MAN BEHIND GHOST’S MOST INFAMOUS VILLAIN
Rick Aviles, born October 14, 1952, in Manhattan, New York, was a Puerto Rican-American stand-up comedian and character actor best remembered for his chilling role as Willie Lopez—the thug who kills Patrick Swayze’s character, Sam Wheat—in the 1990 supernatural blockbuster Ghost. Though his screen time in the film was limited, Aviles left an unforgettable mark with his gritty portrayal of the street criminal whose actions set the entire story into motion.
Before achieving notoriety in Hollywood, Aviles honed his comedic talents in the vibrant clubs of Greenwich Village. With his sharp wit and streetwise humor, he quickly gained traction on the comedy scene. His breakthrough in television came when he was chosen to host It’s Showtime at the Apollo from 1987 to 1991, introducing performers at the legendary Harlem venue and showcasing his natural charisma.
In addition to Ghost, Aviles appeared in several films throughout the 1980s and early ’90s. His film credits include The Cannonball Run (1981), Jim Jarmusch’s Mystery Train (1989), and Brian De Palma’s Carlito’s Way (1993), where he played another small-time crook in the gritty world of New York crime. Often typecast as a tough guy, Aviles brought complexity and dark humor to his roles.
Tragically, just as his career was gaining momentum, Aviles’ life was cut short. On March 17, 1995, he died in Los Angeles at the age of 42 due to complications from AIDS-related heart failure. His passing was a sobering loss to both the comedy and film communities.
Though best known as a villain on screen, those who knew Rick Aviles remembered him as a talented performer with a big heart and a powerful stage presence. His portrayal of Willie Lopez remains one of the most iconic antagonists in ’90s cinema, ensuring that Rick Aviles' name—and legacy—live on.
