AHC Seed Grants in Uganda: A catalyst for global research partnership

In 2016, two researchers shared the same question: what is the uptake of and barriers to human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination? Upon meeting, Nicole Basta from the University of Minnesota School of Public Health and Cecily Banura from the Makerere University College of Health Sciences quickly realized their complementary skills and expertise would enable them to tackle this question in rural Uganda, a country where the HPV vaccine has been rolled out nationwide. Their partnership tells the story of how scientific and medical discovery thrives when studies cross borders, and creates the potential to improve health worldwide. Their collaboration was ignited by the Uganda Hub’s networking efforts and funded by an AHC Seed Grant from the University of Minnesota Center for Global Health and Social Responsibility.
