Butterbean vs Ed White 12.4.1997 - IBA Super Heavyweight Title

A four round super heavyweight fight between Eric "Butterbean" Esch and Ed "New Jack" White from 1997. More info below...

Eric Esch, better known as "Butterbean", is a boxing legend. He is known as the King of the Four Rounders and at the time of this fight, was the IBA Super Heavyweight Champion of the World. He weighed well over 300lbs and stood just a fraction under 6 ft tall. What he lacked in speed and finesse, he more than made up for with his power and durable chin. He had a record of 29-1, his only loss was a 2nd round TKO at the hands of Mitchell Rose in 1995. He had racked up 14 wins in a row since then, all but one of them by KO. Many boxing fans saw Butterbean as nothing more than a joke. He was clearly over-hyped but regardless of anybodies opinion, he was a big fan favorite. He had a look and personality that the public loved, and he was entertaining to watch. I first became aware of Butterbean as a teenager after watching him KO Bart Gunn at the 1999 Wrestle-mania. Since then he was a favorite of mine, even now I still think he was awesome... but more because of his personality and physical appearance than anything else. My fascination of pro wrestling and anybody involved in it may also be skewing my opinion slightly...

Ed "New Jack" White had a record of 4-1 and took great pride in never having been knocked down or out. He stood 6 ft 6 inches tall and weighed 255lbs with an 80" reach. He was a big big man, but he was also 35 years old and had limited in ring experience compared to the Butterbean.

Ed White fought well for the first round. He kept Butterbean at bay with good jabs and followed through with big lunging straights aimed right at the chin. Even though Butterbean got tagged a few times with big shots, nothing seemed to phase him and he kept coming forwards. Throughout the fight White constantly kept his hands low leaving his chin exposed and in the second round Butterbean finally caught him. Sending White to the canvas twice before the ref called it off.

Butterbean would go on to have many more four round fights against over matched opponents. His next loss would not come until 2001 at the hands of Billy Zumbrun. Ed White would go on to fight top contenders like Paea Wolfgramm, DaVarryl Williamson, Siarhei Liakhovich and even Tim Witherspoon, losing to all of them by 1st round KO. In 2006 he had a rematch against Butterbean, however he lost by TKO after suffering a shoulder injury in the first round. After 11 losses in a row, Ed White finally retired in 2007 with a record of 11-15.
