Leo’s Loo Automatic Self-Cleaning Litter Box: Unboxing, Review & Litter-Robot 3 Comparison!

Leo’s Loo vs. Litter-Robot 3: These automatic self-cleaning litter boxes cost $399 and up—which one is best for your cat? Watch my hands-on, head to head comparison to find out!

Both of these automatic, self cleaning cat litter boxes work in a similar manner--they have weight sensors which detect when your cat has entered the box, and this kicks off a cleaning cycle after a waiting period once the cat departs. The devices have a spherical globe where the litter is located--this begins to slowly rotate and the litter is sifted through a screen. Clumps of waste are too big to pass through the screen and are routed to a plastic bag lined waste drawer at the bottom of the unit. Then, the clean litter is placed back and a pristine, smooth bed of litter awaits your cat's next visit.

Compared with the Litter-Robot 3, the Leo’s Loo is a bit shorter, but slightly wider. The controls are simpler—you have a power button, a button for the included night light, a reset button to reset the kitty visit count, and a mode button to change to manual mode from automatic (if you don’t want your Leo’s Loo to cycle automatically after a kitty visit). The Litter-Robot 3 control panel is more complicated, which may or may not be a pro in your opinion.

It has a much smaller opening for your cat to get in and out, which might be problematic for some larger cats, but my 8 pound cats had no issues with it, and having a smaller opening may result in less litter getting kicked out.

More concerningly, the interior space for your cat is also a lot smaller in the Leo’s Loo as opposed to the Litter-Robot 3. The Litter-Robot 3 is much roomier, especially in terms of height.

Both the Litter-Robot 3 and the Leo’s Loo have a flexible rubber bottom section in the interior where the cat litter is. The Litter-Robot 3 rubber feels thicker and more durable to me than the silicone rubber used in the Leo’s Loo, but that’s just my initial impression. It may hold up well over time.

The waste drawer for the Leo’s Loo has some similarities to the waste drawer for the Litter Robot 3—both have a spot in the front section for a carbon filter and waste section in the back, but the Leo’s Loo version is much smaller than the Litter-Robot 3 drawer, and its waste bag attachment system, which uses easy to lose detachable clips, is more irritating to use.

The wait time for the automatic cleaning cycle is set to 3 minutes for the Leo’s Loo and cannot be changed. For the Litter-Robot 3, you can choose between 3, 7 and 15 minutes for your automatic clean cycle. Depending on your cat, 3 minutes might be a rather short waiting time before the start of the cleaning cycle and could lead to waste clumps sticking to the rubber liner or sifting screen.

Operating volume is where the Leo’s Loo really shines. It is quite a bit quieter than the Litter-Robot 3 when going through a cleaning cycle, and that may be a major pro for some people, depending upon where they put their automatic litter box.

Finally, another strong point in the Leo’s Loo favor is that it will work with much smaller cats than the Litter-Robot 3. The Litter-Robot 3 requires your cat to be at least 5 pounds to use it, whereas Leo’s Loo will work with kitties as small as 2 pounds.

Overall, I think the Leo's Loo is an interesting product, but as a long time Litter-Robot user, I would have a hard time recommending Leo’s Loo over the Litter-Robot 3 or Litter-Robot 3 Connect. It is a little cheaper, at $399 versus $449, but the downsides outweigh the upsides in my view. Plus, it is backed by a newcomer to the market, as opposed to Litter-Robot, who has been around for 20 years. All in all, I’d recommend spending the extra $50.
