Cape San Blas cut in half by Hurricane Michael

Hurricane Michael swept up upon Florida's gulf coastline within a matter of a couple short days. Nobody was fully prepared as speculation originally anticipated the storm to only be a category 2 or 3 hurricane–still extremely strong but nowhere near 160+ mph winds that were experienced on the day it hit. Although Hurricane Michael impacted somewhere around Mexico Beach, Cape San Blas received a heavy blow from the deadly winds and storm surge. Cutting through massive fifteen foot dunes, the storm surge breached the St. Joseph Peninsula State Park completely leaving a massive gap with depths around twelve to eighteen feet. Cape San Blas had been completely cut in half essentially creating a new "San Blas Island". The results of the breach were both terrifying and beautiful at the same time. Over time the breach filled in on its own through accretion with the tides, and the State Park intends to repair access to the cabins and campsites moving forward.
