This is not a post to pat our own selves on the back or toot our own horn.
But to say thank you to everyone who helped and to show that when all else fails, you just have to roll up your sleeves and get to it and if you are lucky, other kind hearted souls will come to your aid!
We can all do our bit and try to help another soul in anyway we can. Kindness and good deeds are contagious... let’s try and spread a bit more of that around!
This poor Seeya was found sprawled across the side of the road (Coner Bauddaloka Mawatha & Galle Road) just getting wet like a piece of trash.
Aunty Nadiya had seen him last night and given him food but wanted to get him off the streets with the pouring rain.
Our first stop was the Bambalapitiya Police Station where they were kind enough to listen to us but couldn’t offer much in terms of help. They said all these matters fall under the Department of Social Services, from whom they barely receive any help. They themselves try to feed the people on the streets from the police mess and try to do whatever they can. They did however call 1990 on our behalf.
We went back to where the Seeya was to wait for the ambulance. Someone had covered him with a piece of polythene to at least try and protect him from the crashing rains. Two kind hearted ladies from the hospital/covid Centre across the road came and helped us get some hot coffee in him. Thank you! 🙏🏽
An ambulance arrived all the way from Borelasgamuwa area, only to find out they can’t do much either. Seeya wasn’t particularly ill. Even if he were, non of the hospitals are apparently admitting patients off the streets, a guardian needs to be present, on top of that there is an Attendant’s Union strike going on. They said they would just get yelled at if they tried. But they did offer to help handle and clean him up. Thank you Kasun & Nirasha from 1990 Services who took time out, stayed back and helped us out🙏🏽
So the authorities and so called ‘systems’ had no help to offer and we just couldn’t leave him there and go.
The only thing that was left to do is to clean him up, put him in some fresh clothes and give him the food that Aunty had brought along and find him some shelter.
We had to run around and try to find some water and a bucket but another kind soul from the dentist clinic connected a hose and provided us with water. Thank you🙏🏽
We had to lift him up to his wheelchair and take him to the side of the road behind a bus to give him a bath. He was shivering at that point in time.
A kind hearted gentleman who runs a shop across the road who saw us came running and offered to scrub and clean the Seeya for us. He then offered to give him shelter in the shop and give him some food at least until the rains subside. He also fed him the parcel of rice that was taken and Seeya finally looked a little better, out of the rain, in dry clothes and with a bit of food. Thank you so much Deepal because we wouldn’t have known what to do or where to take him after🙏🏽
It was heartwarming to see that even in tough and cautious times like this, our people still have kindness in their heart to come forward and help another human who is in peril. In times where all you hear is bad news, sickness, death and the mind bogglingly bogus things done by the authorities, there are people who help out in anyway they can to make someone’s life better and that’s the take away from today’s experience for me.
Thank you Aunty Nadiya for taking me along, because of you, I get to help out in some little way🙏🏽
If there’s anyone who knows of a service or an establishment or a home that can help take care of this Seeya, we urge you to please let us know so he doesn’t end up drenched, cold and shivering in the streets again.
