SPERM WHALES in Dominica

In November 2018 we set off on our second expedition with Global Ocean Exploration (@gaelingoexplore) in search of sperm whales, the largest of the toothed whales and the largest predators in the world. This trip followed our trip to Norway the previous year in search of a different large toothed predator (orcas).

Dominica is a small island located between Guadeloupe and Martinique, roughly halfway through the chain of Lesser Antilles islands that separate the Caribbean Sea from the Atlantic Ocean. The sperm whales are thought to be residents of Dominica's west coast primarily due to the fact that the ocean floor here drops very steeply to several thousand feet and is still very close to shore, providing a calm and sheltered area for the whales to hunt giant squid, rest and socialize.

Dominica is not just about sperm whales; the island also has beautiful volcanoes, waterfalls, rainforests, hundreds of rivers, and the wildlife to match. Unfortunately this beautiful island was devastated by Hurricane Maria in 2017 - and in many ways the island is still recovering. It was inspiring to see how the community has bonded over the hardship, with the locals always willing to lend a helping hand to fellow islanders and visitors alike.

We weren't the luckiest with the whales on this expedition, but that's the name of the game and we will certainly be back!
