Bobby Rush's Classic Blues: Acoustic Guitar Sessions

Louisiana bluesman Bobby Rush stopped by the Acoustic Guitar Sessions studio to play a few songs from his 60-plus year career.

First up was “You Just Like a Dresser,” from his 2013 album Down in Louisiana, then “Tough Times,” followed by “Porcupine Meat,” the title track off his 2016 release of the same name.

“Porcupine meat” refers to a romance gone awry, in which Rush compares the state of relationship limbo — he knows it’s over but he can’t quite walk away — as porcupine meat, because it’s “too fat to eat, too lean to throw away.” He adds with a smile, “I been there.”

Rush ends with a spoken-word rendition of “I Don’t Want Nobody Hanging Around,” a humorous ditty about possession.
