2016 Construction of American River Salmonid Habitat Restoration project at Sacramento Bar

A home makeover for Chinook Salmon and Steelhead at Sacramento Bar on the American River, the project includes a widened floodplain, a new side channel, and new spawning habitat in the main river channel. We added large wood, willows, and boulders to provide better juvenile habitat at low flows. The lowered floodplain should be incrementally inundated as flows rise and naturally revegetate with willows in a couple years. Previously the banks were steep and mostly barren of vegetation much past the low water line and the main river channel was composed mostly of large cobble.
