The 1897 Henry James' novel of an overbearing and forceful mother butting heads with her son's equally pugnacious fiancee Mona while the weak and foolish son Owen flutters between them. The tranquil and scrupulous Fleda gets lost in between the three. The 1970 BBC adaptation is very much like watching a play, something often found in early productions. with Gemma Jones, Pauline Jameson, Ian Ogilvy and Diane Fletcher.
