10 Amazing Things Captured in the Depths of the Sea
We know more about outer space than the ocean floor, that is a fact. That’s why it’s such a big deal
when we learn something new about its depths. Today, we will be looking at 10 amazing things captured
in the depths of the sea. Number one is literally an underwater river. Impossible? Stay tuned to find out
more.

10. A 2400-Year-Old Shipwreck
The world’s oceans are truly dangerous and turbulent places. Over the centuries, countless ships have
sunk to its depths, often loaded with treasure, never to be seen again. Yet, although the sea does
destroy, they can somehow preserve as well. Certain parts of the ocean floor are virtual time capsules,
preserving anything and everything within them for future generations to discover, which is exactly
what happened to a ship that last sailed approximately 2400 years ago, which was found virtually intact
at the bottom of the black sea.
The 2,400-year-old wooden vessel features elements of ship construction, including the mast and
rowing benches, that until then have not been preserved on ships of this age. The 2,400-year-old

The 75-foot-long ship, documented by a Remote Operated Vehicle equipped with cameras, appears
similar to merchant vessels depicted on ancient Greek vases. A small piece of the wreck was raised and
radiocarbon dated to around the fifth century B.C., a time when Greek city-states were frequently
trading between the Mediterranean and their colonies along the Black Sea coast.

Number 9. New Jersey’s Train Graveyard
If you were to name of a place where you could find antique locomotives, the bottom of the sea
wouldn’t be the first place that would come to mind. But those are just what Paul Hepler found back in
1985 while he was mapping the ocean floor just five miles off the coast of Long Branch, New Jersey with
his magnetometer. He was puzzled to see that his instrument picked up two massive metal objects just
90 feet below the surface. Due to the water being dirty, he couldn’t really see what they were from the
surface.
The two locomotives were the Planet Class 2-2-2 T models, which were only made for a short time
because they became obsolete nearly as soon as they were produced. It’s a mystery how and why the
two locomotives got there, but of course, there are quite a few speculations.
One theory states that the locomotives were being transported by boat when a sudden storm came and
sank the vessel. Another, more plausible theory states that while during the storm, the sailors opted to
push them overboard in order to save the ship and their lives.

Number 8. The Silfra Crack

The Silfra Crack is part of the Atlantic rift, the dividing line between the continents of Europe and
America. It’s basically a huge crack on the earth’s surface marking the area where two tectonic plates
meet. For the most part, this crack is mainly unseen, but in Iceland, divers regularly swim in it and
remains the only part of the world where you can touch both Europe and America at the same time.
In this part of the world, the water is so clear that it has become a popular diving location. This amazing
visibility is due to a couple of factors. One, the water remains at a constant -2 degrees Celsius which
helps to keep aquatic life away, and the fact the waters are fed by glacial melt 50 kilometers away which
is filtered through porous rocks on its long journey.
Although a popular diving spot, it is highly discouraged to venture deeper than 60 meters, where the
Silfra cave is located. Due to its nature, earthquakes regularly happen in the area which is highly
dangerous for divers.
Number 7. The Walking Anglerfish
As soon as scientist were presented with the technology to venture into the deep sea, it seems that they
visit the place every chance they get, which has led to numerous amazing discoveries over the years.
And during these forays to commune with the denizens of the deep, one particular fish has always
captured the imaginations of marine biologists; the anglerfish.
Known for their bioluminescent appendage on their head which they use as a glowing lure for their prey,
these fish are famous for many things, but walking isn’t one of them. That’s why when one was
discovered during one deep sea expedition, it got scientists really excited.
This walking angler fish is called the Schaefer’s Anglerfish, also known as the goosefish. This species is
very rare and is seldom spotted, much less filmed. One was spotted the Okeanos SE Deep-sea
