One hour of string quartets from the three composers who built the form — Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven — by candlelight in a warm salon. Three complete quartets: Haydn's sunny "Lark," Mozart's stormy D-minor K. 421, and Beethoven's Op. 18 No. 6, which ends with the famous slow introduction he labeled "La Malinconia" — melancholy itself. Two violins, a viola, and a cello: the most intimate conversation in all of music. Pull up a chair and stay a while.

The string quartet was essentially invented at this table. Haydn wrote dozens of them and set the template; Mozart studied Haydn's so closely he dedicated a whole set back to him; and Beethoven took the form he inherited from both and eventually cracked it wide open. The three quartets here trace that handoff — and listen for how the writing keeps getting bolder, right up to Beethoven ending a sunny B-flat quartet with a passage marked, in plain Italian, "the melancholy."
