March 18th, 2017. On this day, "Middleweight Madness" took place between undefeated Gennady “GGG” Golovkin and “The Golden Child” Daniel Jacobs in one of the most exciting fights of 2017. Golovkin’s IBF, IBO, WBA (Super) & WBC Middleweight Titles were on the line.

However, the IBF title was not at stake for Daniel Jacobs as he skipped the IBF second weigh in where he and GGG were required to weigh no more than 170 pounds. It is estimated that Jacobs had a 10 to 15 pound weight advantage over Golovkin, weighing about 182 pounds on fight night.

Prefight records; Golovkin 36(33)-0, Jacobs 32(29)-1.

While GGG was the favorite going into the fight, a huge upset happened in the main undercard fight where little known Thai challenger Wisaksil Wangek aka "Srisaket Sor Rungvisai" scored a shocking and somewhat controversial MD win over undefeated No. 1 P4P fighter, Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez.

It was Gonzalez’s 1st professional loss in 12 years. Wangek received a lot of criticisms for his excessive use of headbutts which caused Chocolatito to bleed heavily throughout the fight. However, it should be noted that Gonzalez was competing in his 4th weight division at that time against a naturally stronger and bigger man in Rungvisai.

Thus, some have predicted the possibility of a Jacobs upset even though opinions were largely in favor of Golovkin to win by knockout; 80% favored GGG to win by KO in a Boxrec poll.

Going into the fight, Golovkin had a record of 17-0 in world title fights with notable wins over Daniel Geale, Curtis Stevens, Marco Antonio Rubio, Kell Brook, Willie Monroe Jr, Martin Murray, Matthew Macklin, Kassim Ouma, Gabriel Rosado & David Lemiuex all by knockouts.

Jacobs had scored meaningful victories over Ishe Smith, Sergio Mora & Peter Quillin.

While Jacobs’ apparent size advantage was expected, but many were rather surprised (including GGG) by the Miracle Man’s masterful stick and move strategy coupled with occasional stance switching which created a lot of troubles for the reigning world champion, who could not connect as often and cleanly as he was able to do against most of his previous opponents.

Additionally, Jacobs' weight advantage of up to 15 pounds enabled him to absorb Golovkin’s best shots.

GGG’s best moment occurred in the 4th frame when he floored Jacobs with 2 big right hands; making it the only 10-8 round of the fight. The rest of the bout was all in all action packed and extremely competitive, with many close and difficult-to-score rounds.

Both fighters displayed incredible heart, determination and will to win.

For the first time in 37 fights in an 11 year career, Golovkin was greatly troubled due to Jacobs’ elusive tactics who arguably gave him his hardest fight to date. Jacobs is also the 1st man to last the distance against the Middleweight Monster since Amar Amari back in November 2008.

GGG remains undefeated, via a disputed UD. What do you think of the decision?

In an unofficial scoring by a panel of 17 press row members, 9 scored in favor of GGG while 6 had Jacobs ahead after the 12th round. 2 others had it a draw.

However, just a few months after this fight the highly anticipated Middleweight Showdown between Gennady Golovkin and Canelo Alvarez finally took place; Canelo, utilizing a similar strategy employed by Jacobs also troubled GGG and lasted the distance as well, also in a very exciting action-filled fight.

It ended with a somewhat controversial 3 way draw with scores of 114-114, 115-113, 110-118. Opinions were split, as to whether GGG or Alvarez deserved the decision. What’s more controversial was Adalaide Byrd’s scorecard of 118-110 in favor of Alvarez, a decision she received severe criticisms for.

Who do you think was the deserving winner of the fight? And who do you think wins in the rematch and how? Let me know in the comments.
