How To Build A Garden Bench With Mortise & Tenon Joinery

A garden bench can really add some charm and function to the exterior of your home. It's a great place to wait for kids coming home on the school bus, or to take family pictures, or to sit and enjoy your yard. This example uses common and inexpensive pressure-treated pine re-sawn into appropriate sizes. All the joints are mortise and tenon, glued with exterior grade waterproof glue. Some of the joints are pegged as well. The bench will seat two adults or three children. Best of all, it is designed to sit outdoors all year round.

To build this bench you'll want a table saw and a router table, plus common electric hand tools. It could be made entirely with a circular saw and hand tools, but it would take much more time. In this video I'll show you some woodworking tips and tricks, and I'll go over important measurements and dimensions so you can build your own version. The original version lasted twenty years!
