Today my lovely student Lena joins us to discuss her thesis topic on Handedness in Artistic Expression.
Find out how you can take the assessment and learn more about your unique creative style.
More from Lena...
Anyone familiar with the left-brain/right brain concept that those who are right-handed activate the left hemisphere (related to analytical thinking/organization/language/numbers) and left-handed activate the right-hemisphere (emotional intelligence/expression/imagination)? Do you think that you can relate to this depending on your handedness?
-I was always curious myself, if my handedness was an explanation for my certain traits because I noticed some differences between me, my expression, and others. I then began to notice similarities between me and other lefties... Lefties have been stereotyped to be more creativity, anxiety prone, "different," and I wonder if that is really because of the different hemispheres that are activated?
-For those who make art, I want you to think about whether you gravitate to certain subjects, themes, materials in art making? What kind of art making would you not like/gravitate towards? I like to make mini furniture using popsicle sticks and hot glue for instance. I also like to doodle little characters with varying hair and clothes. I also like to use metaphors in imagery to elaborate on certain thoughts I'm having using color and lines. I don't like mandalas and patterns though or anything pattern, geometric, "abstract," or structure related. My art almost never incorporates these elements. I want you to really think about if you use recurring art materials and themes in your work, if you do, you may be interested in this study!
-This study involves answering a lengthy questionnaire about your specific art preferences; by submitting an art piece that represents and embodies your artmaking preferences (58 questions and a short description about it and its process), you will receive your results which will allow you to further reflect on your artistic expression and what may be determinant of them!
-Depending on results, you can challenge yourself by activating different areas of the brain, and ultimately access a creative level... one can do this by using certain materials that are out of their comfort zone. You will receive your results by email and be given more information about your results and what they may mean in context of your artistic expression!
Happy Holidays, and thank you again,
Best,
Lena Gruber
